100% Pure Bear Lard $25.00 pint.
This is the firmer rendered bear lard.
We still have bear oil available though we are out of the bear lard and bear grease until the fall of 2026.
Contact me closer to Christmas 2026 to check on the availability of bear lard and bear grease.

100% Very Oily Bear Grease $35.00 pint
This is not a clear oil nor is it a thick lard.
The longer it sets the more the oil may come to the top.
I cannot totally figure out how the grease separates like this.

We still have bear oil available though we are out of the bear lard and bear grease until the fall of 2026.
Contact me closer to Christmas 2026 to check on the availability of bear lard and bear grease.

100% Bear Oil  (available)
8 oz. for $25.00
4 oz. for $15.00
1 oz. for $5.00
This is the difference in the bear fat from two different bears that I ground in the meat grinder before I rendered the bear fat into lard/grease.

From a bit of research that a customer, John, and I did, it seems the firmer bear grease that I refer to as bear lard has a higher saturated fat while what I refer to as bear grease has a higher unsaturated fat.
So it seems the black bears diet effects the fat.
Grains or hard mastheavy diets → more saturated fat → firmer fat
Nuts, acorns, berries, fish → higher unsaturated fat → more liquid oil

So it must come down to the fatty acid profile.
If it’s firm and white when cool → higher saturated fat
If it stays golden and liquid → higher unsaturated fat
Both are usable — just for different purposes:
(though I myself use it interchangeably)
Firmer fat → pastries, frying
Liquid grease and oil → cooking, seasoning, leather treatment (traditional use), greasing your long rifle, horn work, making lotions, hair treatments, etc.

We use both the bear grease or the bear lard in our homemade leather dressing, patch lube and tallow balm.

I personally think the bear grease has more of the bear oil in it then the bear lard. The bear oil is the oil which comes to the top of the bear grease and is then poured off into another container to be used.

The bear oil is used in different aspects of the long-rifle use and care. You can keep your longrifle greased to prevent rust or use the bear oil for patch lube.

With the processing of bear grease / bear lard and bear oil I use the bear fat when I trimmed off all the meat trimmings and discard the meat trimmings.
I then grind the bear fat into teeny pieces with my meat grinder.
With that finished I was ready to render the bear fat to make the bear grease / bear lard.
I placed the bear fat into an electric roaster or my roasting pan in the oven and cooked the fat for hours. As the membrane which holds the fat together is separated from the grease or oil, it turns to cracklings. When the bear grease / bear lard is finished, the cracklings will turn brown and sink to the bottom and float back to the top. I needed to keep stirring the bear fat periodically so the bear fat wouldn’t burn. When I decided the bear grease / bear lard was all cooked I strained the cracklings from the bear grease / bear lard and put the bear grease / bear lard thru my lard press or let it drain overnight thru a cotton cloth. Then I put the bear grease / bear lard into glass jars and seal it. The cracklings are good to eat for a snack or to put out for the birds. That was the process of turning the bear fat into bear grease / bear lard. The ending product of the bear lard is no better then beginning product of the bear fat.
The bear fat must be processed immediately into bear grease/ bear lard.
Bear fat will spoil in less then 3 days unless it is frozen until you can get the bear fat processed. If the raw bear fat is frozen for a length of time it will go rancid and take on an old smell.
Depending on what the bear was eating the bear fat will not be good.
If the bear fat smells bad the bear lard will smell bad.
When I rendered out the bear lard my house smelled like I was making homemade donuts!
When using bear grease for eating I find the firmer bear grease / bear lard is better for pie crusts, biscuits, cookie dough while the more liquid bear grease is good for frying, salad oil, making popcorn and fried eggs or fried chicken.

The bear lard and oil are processed in a clean environment.
Just to let you know that it depends on the way the bear fat was handled before I get it depends whether the bear lard or bear oil has more of a gamey smell which turns to more of a roast pork smell when the bear lard is rendered is rendered.
So for this reason also the color of the lard and oil may be from a white to a darker tan which is beyond my control.

Due to food and health regulations, I am not providing bear lard and bear oil as a food item even though I process the bear lard and oil in a clean environment. We have used the bear lard in cooking when we have an abundance of the bear lard and don’t need it for our leather dressing.

As we have a small brick and morter store where I do some baking to sell, my food inspector was in my kitchen the day as I was packaging some bear grease. She asked about my labels. I assured her this was not processed for food and I showed her my label. So she did not write me up for an infraction because of the label. It is entirely up to you if you decide you are going to use this for food. Like I said before, my kitchen is inspected for baked goods so I work in a clean environment.

Bear grease / bear lard can also be used for for hair oil, hand lotion, or for chapped lips. An old folk lore has it that if a man greases his head with bear oil he will grow an abundance of hair! I do like it for my chapped hands.

There can be several layers in the bear grease when you process it. The bear oil comes to the top in the jar, and the bear grease / bear lard is heavier so it is at the bottom.
After the canned bear grease / bear lard sets for awhile is when the bear oil comes to the top.
There is a mystery with bear lard. The weather has a lot to do with bear grease / bear lard and bear oil.

You can use the bear grease / bear lard to tell the weather. Some folks use bear grease as a barometer to tell the weather. I have a chart for telling the weather posted below. It is free upon request with any order ( or you may copy it yourself.)
If the oil clouds up it can be heated again and it will turn back to the bear oil state.
I try to get the bear oil as pure as possible by pouring off the oil as the lard settles to the bottom. But bear oil is hard to predict if it will stay an oil until it is processed several times.

Heart shaped ends for on horn straps

We have three leather heart shape sizes to attach on the ends of woven straps. There is also a small leather tie included to attach the horn.

The sizes of the leather heart shapes are 1 3/8″ , 1 1/2″, and 2″.

The leather heart shapes have the holes punched for easier stitching onto the strap.

The coloring is due to the assorted leathers that we use.

Also is available a needle and waxed dark linen thread.

I will attach your strap for free if you wish.

I can do it for you at one of the gun shows listed above or by contacting me for contact information.

Any size of our leather heart shaped ends for a woven strap is $16.00 a set.

Please specify the small, medium, or large size. Or you may send your strap to me and I will decide which looks and fits the best.

A needle and enough thread for attaching

the leather heart shapes to a woven strap is $2.00.

Shipping will be added to the price.
